Your Romanian driving licence in Belgium: keep it or exchange it

A Romanian driving licence is valid in Belgium. Exchanging it is not mandatory, but sometimes useful or necessary. We explain what is best for you.

Driving licences from other EU countries are recognised in Belgium. You don’t need to register or exchange your Romanian licence when you come to live in Belgium.

Do I have to exchange my Romanian licence?

No. Since 2019 this is no longer mandatory for EU licences. It remains valid until its expiry date.

My licence has expired or will expire soon. What now?

If you live in Belgium, you apply for a new licence at your Belgian municipality. We help with the application.

I lost my licence. What should I do?

Report it to the police, then apply for a replacement licence at your municipality. We explain the steps.
