Health insurance and sickness in Belgium: staying well protected
Anyone living or working in Belgium must be a member of a health insurance fund (mutualiteit / mutualité). If you are ill, you must meet certain deadlines so you don’t lose your benefit. We help you.
Through the health insurance fund you get part of your doctor’s visits, medicines and hospital costs refunded. You choose your own fund, or you go to the public fund (HZIV / CAAMI).
Are you an employee and ill? Send the certificate of incapacity for work to your fund. If you receive guaranteed pay, you have until the 14th day as a blue-collar worker and until the 28th day as a white-collar employee. If you are late, your benefit can be reduced by 10%. The benefit is in principle 60% of your gross wage, with a ceiling.
